WORK EXPERIENCE

2010 Senior correspondent, Beijing bureau, Reuters. Cover Chinese and foreign companies and executives, particularly consumer companies and news, and on what purchases the Chinese middle and luxury classes are spending their money. Previously covered China's banking industry; and economic and financial issues. Interview extensively in Mandarin Chinese.

Closely covered PC and microprocessor makers Dell, HP, Apple, Intel and AMD and others, and their product development, consumer research, financial results and other competitive issues; details of semiconductor manufacturing and waste abatement; scientific challenges and breakthroughs; technology & youth; iPods and MP3 player competition; operating systems; industrial espionage and other topics.

2000-2003 Detroit bureau chief, L.A. Times. Covered all competitive aspects of the U.S. auto industry including manufacturing; design; marketing; liability; alternative propulsion; financial results; market share; safety; Ford-Firestone tire crisis and litigation; Daimler-Chrysler relationship; Japanese and Germans in the U.S. and their alliances and conflicts with the Detroit auto makers, etc.

1998-2000 Detroit bureau chief, Forbes magazine: auto industry, Michigan-based automotive and other corporations. Wrote on corporate/product strategy, executive personalities, market challenges, competition, etc. Had numerous "Forbes Ahead" stories where I was weeks ahead of Fortune, BusinessWeek and Newsweek with identical pieces. 1997-1998 Founding Associate Editor, Forbes Global magazine. Wrote and edited articles and cover stories on non-U.S. automotive, airline, insurance, retail, technology, waste management and other multinationals, primarily in Asia and Europe.

1996-1997 Supervisor and editor, Associated Press Foreign Desk, New York, and United Nations reporter. Intense editing of breaking and daily stories largely from the Middle East, western and eastern Europe, and Latin America. Wrote daily stories on U.N. issues concerning Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Israel, China (population), World Food Program and other topics. Covered U.S.-North Korea talks at U.N.

1990-1996 AP correspondent, Paris. Wrote/edited daily spot and feature stories on French politics and elections; terrorist attacks; Islamic fundamentalism in France and North Africa; European unification; businesses including auto makers Peugeot-Citroen and Renault and wine makers in Bordeaux and Provence; crime; sports; Cannes Film Festivals. North African politics (Islamic Salvation Front and Algerian unrest; Moroccan elections). Covered 1992 Winter Olympics, International Olympic Committee congresses, IAAF (track and field's governing body) and other sports events and topics. Reporting trips to Algeria and Morocco including disputed Western Sahara; Ivory Coast and Liberia (civil war); Cyprus (Operation Desert Shield), and western Europe. Interviewed and translated extensively in French.

1982-1990 AP correspondent, Tokyo. Wrote/edited daily spot and feature stories on Japan’s politics; economy and companies; military; U.S. forces in Japan; crime and gangsters; sports including visiting NCAA college teams from the U.S.; cinema; imperial family, and social, linguistic and other issues. Covered 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Intense editing of stories from China, the Koreas, SE Asia, Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. Interviewed and translated extensively in Japanese. Reporting trips to China including extended coverage of the pro-democracy protests and crackdown at Tiananmen Square; to South Korea; Taiwan. A photo I took of an alternate, street-level view of the famous Man vs. Tank confrontation at Tiananmen that I had never made public was published by the New York Times in June, 2009: click here.

2008 Kiplinger Fellow in digital media at Ohio State University: intense study and training in video filmmaking and editing using Final Cut Pro; photo and audio editing using Photoshop, iPhoto, Audacity and GarageBand; social networking, wikis, blogging and podcasting; public policy in the digital age; international security and the U.S. intelligence community (two semesters).

1995-1996 Knight-Wallace Fellow in Chinese politics and automotive studies, University of Michigan: studied Chinese government and decision-making by China's political elite; automotive lean manufacturing and international joint ventures, in particular in China (one year).

LANGUAGES

Fluent Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, French. June 2009: Scored 4 out of 5 in Japanese speaking and comprehension; 3 in Chinese comprehension and 2.5 in Chinese speaking in standard ILR language exams, the test used by the U.S. State Department for foreign language evaluation. Speak, read French at equivalent of Level 4. Elementary Korean and Russian.
